Russian Hotels to Accept Bitcoin For World Cup

This summer's central event, sporting or otherwise, is without a doubt – the FIFA World Cup in Russia, taking place from June 14th to July 15th. The biggest event in the world of football is played every four years and it brings together 32 of the planet's best national teams and their avid supporters in a colorful display of different nationalities, cultures and spectacular football. The stage is all set for all host cities to start accommodating the visitors – both players and fans – and to enhance the service, there will be one major benefit that will also break some new ground and be the first.

First what? Well, the hotels in eleven Russian cities that will host the World Cup matches are adopting Bitcoin and making it possible for their staying guests to pay for their stay in this cryptocurrency.

The first city to make this move, with more of them coming along soon, is Kaliningrad, Russia's western-most city that is physically divided from the rest of the country and is nestled between Poland and Lithuania (it used to be the part of the old Prussian empire and was the place of birth of the famous philosopher, Immanuel Kant). In this city, national teams of Spain, England, Belgium, Serbia, Croatia, Switzerland, Morocco and Nigeria will be playing their matches so the city is welcoming a large number of fans from these countries.

A hotel chain in this city has already made all the arrangements with a payment processor, Free-Kassa, which will be making this happen. Anna Subotina, a manager of one of the Hotels, Apartments Malina, says: “We are seeing increasing interest in cryptocurrencies. They will gradually come into use as a means of payment. We have decided that fans should be able to pay for our services with the help of this innovative technology.”

Free-Kassa's Development Manager, Vitaliy Lavrov, says: “This is an interesting experience for us – we haven’t worked with hotels so far. The hospitality industry is quite sensitive towards new trends.”

Kaliningrad will be hosting four games during the World Cup and only months before the Cup begins, the accommodation prices in this city have started to soar – making this city even more expensive than it already is. Booking a room on a day when England plays Belgium (which will be one of the biggest matches of the first round) will cost over $300.

Last year, some of Russia's officials slammed Bitcoin, but have also announced that the country may develop its own cryptocurrency – the crypto ruble.

Killing The Goose

Killing The Goose
Killing The Goose

If the old Las Vegas gamblers and casino owners could see what was happening in the new Las Vegas, they would probably turn over in their graves.

When Las Vegas was just a gleam in the eyes of the early gambling promoters like Bugsy Siegel, the concept was simple; provide a DisneyLand for adults where they could enjoy free or low-cost entertainment, cheap food and drinks, and have it all paid for by the gambling.

For years that worked. People were lured to Sin City by the world's top celebrities, along with hotel rooms that went for $19.95 or less, steak and lobster dinners for $3.99, and free lounge shows featuring some of America's best known entertainers.

That was when the mob, nicknamed organized crime by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was in charge.

While Bennie Binion never featured big name acts at his Horseshoe Casino on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas, he did promise his customers good food, cheap whiskey and a great gambling experience, all of which he delivered until his death.

I recently visited Las Vegas and picked up a copy of a free magazine of the same name in my hotel room. Believe me when I saw the magazine was the only free item in the resort.

Here are a few things visitors to Las Vegas are offered these days. P.S. As you read this, keep your credit card handy.

TERRY FATOR, hyped as one of the 'best entertainers in the world,' is appearing at The Mirage on the famed Las Vegas Strip: a ticket to the show is priced at $60.

MYSTERE, CIRQUE DU SOLEIL, is offered at the Treasure Island for $50 per ticket. The casino does offer free parking.

MAT FRANCO, a young magician and illusionist at the Linq Hotel. Price per ticket: $42 to $109.90.

BLUE MAN GROUP, appearing at the Luxor, $59 to $115 per ticket. You can go VIP (whatever that means) for $175 per person.

PENN AND TELLER, humorists and magicians, appear at the Rio where the price to their show ranges from $75 to $97.

BEATLEMANIA is being featured at The Mirage, where actors portray the Beatles on stage. Tickets range from $79 to $180, plus tax and fee.

Now I have watched some great performers in Las Vegas, but I did it in the early days when the prices were right. For example, I viewed the Four Freshmen in a free lounge show at a casino on Las Vegas Boulevard. It was a very intimate show and brought back memories of m college years.

I also saw Tony Bennett. I can't remember the cover charge but it must have been reasonable or I wouldn't have paid it.

The mob was smart. They were selling gambling and the entertainers simply brought the customers to the tables. They took some of their gambling profits and used the money to cover the cost of entertainment. There is an old Latin phrase that goes 'something for something,' and that is what the mob gave to the public.

The same went with food. I still remember those high in the sky flashing neon signs promising you steak, prime rib, hot dogs, shrimp, champagne at super-low prices. True, these specials were served after midnight in many but not all cases. But they were real values and they brought people to Las Vegas by the droves.

Today's casino corporate heads -- and I hate to say this -- are greedy. They take as much as they think they can gouge from the public. It isn't the style of the old Las Vegas and you have to wonder how long this continues before the casino industry kills the goose that laid the golden egg.

This is the brand’s second deal of this kind in the country.

Caliente, which is the leading online gambling operator in Mexico, will thus be providing the developer’s suite of award-winning, cutting-edge gaming titles to their punters in this Central American country. Caliente Casino is the most popular in Mexico as well, so their numerous players will be delighted to be able to enjoy slot titles from such an esteemed developer.

GEN HK slims annual loss but Manila attack hurt numbers

Casino cruise ship operator and Asian casino investor Genting Hong Kong Ltd narrowed sharply in 2017 its annual loss. Such loss was approximately US$242.3 million, compared to US$502.3 million in 2016.

The improvement – which had been flagged in a February filing – was partly due to a “one-off gain of US$205 million” which the firm had earlier said related to sale of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd shares and sale of shares in The Star Entertainment Group Ltd, an Australian casino operator. Another factor was “the absence of an impairment on Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings’ shares of US$305 million” as had occurred in 2016, the firm noted in its latest filing.

The group did however see a dramatic fall in its share of profit from joint ventures and associates, to US$1.3 million in the 12 months to December 31, compared to US$32.4 million a year earlier.

The decrease was “mainly due” to a lower contribution from Travellers International Hotel Group Inc, which operates the Resorts World Manila casino complex in the Philippines.

That venue had been “affected by closure of the gaming area and portions of the non-gaming segment for most of June 2017 following the incident on 2 June,” said Genting Hong Kong. It was referring to a lone-gunman attack, fire and subsequent deaths that occurred at the property on that date. Genting Hong Kong is an investor – alongside Philippine conglomerate Alliance Global Group Inc – in Travellers International.

Genting Hong Kong said in financial year 2017, the group had also incurred start-up losses in the Dream Cruises brand related to its new World Dream cruise ship (pictured) that arrived in Hong Kong and the repositioning of its Genting Dream vessel to Singapore in November 2017; and had had costs linked to the group’s Crystal Cruises brand moving into the river cruise market; and from the launch of its AirCruises segment.

The group did not give in its annual results a breakdown specifically on its gaming revenue. But it said revenue from cruise and cruise-related activities – which includes “revenue from food and beverage sales, shore excursion, entertainment and other onboard services” – increased 11.9 percent to just under US$1.02 billion in 2017, compared with

US$908.1 million in 2016. Net Revenue in 2017 increased 14.0 percent to US$786.0 million from US$689.7 million in 2016. It said the improvement was due to an 33.7 percent increase in “capacity days”, which was “primarily due to the inclusion of a full year of operations” for its Genting Dream and Crystal Mozart cruise ships as well as the launch of its World Dream, Crystal Bach and Crystal Mahler vessels during 2017.

Revenue from shipyard operations and non-cruise activities from external customers increased 60.6 percent to US$174.4 million in 2017 compared with US$108.6 million in 2016 “primarily contributed by revenue from its shipyard activities and from sales of residential property units in mainland China”.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Becomes Bethard's Ambassador

A world-famous football phenomenon (that's soccer, for our US-based friends), the Swedish superstar, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has recently signed two massive deals that will take his amazing career to further heights. Having completed his stint with Manchester United, Zlatan has signed a contract for the MLS club LA Galaxy where he will be playing starting next season. Also, he has become an ambassador for the Swedish betting operator, Bethard!

Ibrahimovic – whose stellar career had him playing for all the major European teams: Ajax, Juventus, Milan, Inter, Barcelona, Paris St Germain and United – will be also taking on duties concerning the development of the company's offering. Zlatan himself said he is very pleased to be working with Bethard, having already rejected several other betting companies: “I have obviously been intensively courted by betting companies throughout my career, but up until now I have not been presented to anything that has triggered me. With Bethard, there was something different. It’s a company with Swedish roots, the founders are from my home town and they are true challengers who really wants to do things differently.”

The Swedish betting operator’s co-founder and chief executive, Erik Skarp comments: “We have taken a bold decision to start building a next generation sports betting brand and we are of course super excited to welcome Zlatan onboard. This move marks the starting signal for us. Through the agreement we will not only have an outstanding brand ambassador, but also a very engaged co-owner who I know will push us relentlessly forward.”

Ibrahimovic is already making their appearance on Bethard Casino as the recurring theme of “winning in the world of high odds.”

Philippines casino GGR up 14 pct in full 2017: Pagcor

The Philippine casino industry reported gross gaming revenue (GGR) of PHP152.55 billion (US$2.9 billion) in full calendar 2017, up by 13.8 percent from the prior-year period, said the country’s gaming regulator.

Private-sector casino resorts in the Philippine capital Manila recorded overall GGR of PHP109.38 billion in 2017, an increase of 25.6 percent compared to PHP87.10 billion in the previous 12 months, according to data released this week by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp (Pagcor).

Manila’s private-sector casino resort sector includes four properties, namely: City of Dreams Manila, run by a subsidiary of Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd; Solaire Resort and Casino, controlled by Bloomberry Resorts Corp; Resorts World Manila, owned and operated by Travellers International Hotel Group Inc, a venture between Philippine-based Alliance Global Group Inc and Genting Hong Kong Ltd; and Okada Manila, owned and operated by Tiger Resort, Leisure and Entertainment Inc, a subsidiary of Japanese gaming conglomerate Universal Entertainment Corp.

The data showed GGR generated by the casino junket segment stood at PHP41.75 billion for full 2017, representing 27.4 percent of total casino GGR for the period. The majority of junket-generated casino GGR was recorded in the private-sector casinos – a total of PHP33.58 billion – rather than the Pagcor-run ones.

In 2017, “non-junket” GGR represented 39.2 percent of the total, while electronic gaming machines claimed a market share of 33.4 percent.

Last year, revenue from electronic gaming sites – including traditional bingo, electronic games and sports betting – reached PHP23.63 billion.

Starting from the third quarter of 2017, the regulator began compiling data for “offshore gaming”. The sector achieved GGR of PHP319 million in the second half of the year.

State-owned Pagcor started accepting applications from companies wishing to acquire a Philippines licence for offshore gaming in September 2016.

Aside from being the sector’s regulator, Pagcor directly operates a suite of state-run casinos. Its own brand of casinos is called “Casino Filipino”. According to the latter’s website, the brand operates venues in 8 locations across the country, and has a further 34 so-called “satellite” sites across the Philippines.

Pagcor casinos reported GGR of PHP34.38 billion in 2017, up by 8.0 percent in year-on-year terms, show the firm’s latest data.

Get to Know Foxium in LCB’s Exclusive Interview

A new slots studio emerged in the iGaming space in 2015. LCB’ers may recognize the modest collection of video slot games, which includes FruitZ, The Odd Forest and Lucky Bakery to name a few. Based in Estonia, the company’s story was rather vague and information limited. Intrigued by the games and the name, we approached Foxium and got lucky enough to snag an interview with their CEO, Åke André, and Creative Director, Daniil Sanders - Thanks, guys! They’ve got a productive 2018 planned in terms of game releases and more. Without further ado, the interview.

Q: We’d like to offer you the floor to elaborate on the company’s history and the concept behind the name, Foxium.

Daniil Sanders: When we first decided to create this company, Foxium, we thought about being different and standing out from the crowd. The principal values that we all agree upon are, quality, creativity and excellent player experience. The years of individual experience we enjoyed in our respective specialized fields, came together collectively, and enabled us to reach our goals. It was merely a case of the right people, at the right time, and everything is working smoothly now. The founders of Foxium, and the creative team are: Maria Dementieva – Artist designer, Daniil Sanders – Creative Director, Igor Vesselov – CTO and Åke André – CEO.

Q: We understand that gamification and mobile technology are important aspects of game development. Tell us more about this approach and the products you offer?

Daniil Sanders: We always try to keep up with the times. Mobile technology does not stand still, improvements and enhancements appear fast in our daily lives. Mobile gaming has become the players’ number one choice of accessing an online casino to play a game. We at Foxium create our games with this in mind. If we take one of our upcoming games as an example, we are now using real-time 3D rendering processes for game characters along with our new game engine. 3D real-time rendering gives us much livelier and realistic characters in our games. Furthermore, this also opens up new possibilities for player interaction. We are now also using adaptive soundtracks. They take our games even further, and to a higher level. After all, the player experience is crucial when it comes to games, whether casino slots or console games. All the above factors combine to create eye candy, atmospheric music, and entertaining, well-crafted mathematics make our games unique. To wrap up, let’s not forget that games run on HTML5, so finding the perfect balance between performance and a great looking graphics, is a real challenge. It can be a tricky process, yet a satisfying one, when all the work put into a game comes to fruition.

Q: Are your products licensed and which markets are they currently geared towards?

Daniil Sanders: Yes, of course. All our games are licensed and we will continue to focus on the European market but our next step will be penetrating the Asian market.

Q: Your current portfolio is quite modest, yet the games lack nothing in terms of quality. Can we expect more regular releases this year?

Åke André: We have quite an exciting roadmap for 2018. We have already produced some online titles, such as The Odd Forest, The Lost Riches of Amazon, Fruitz, Lucky Bakery and Big Time Journey. These games have rich features and engaging storylines. Last year we released our first, branded slot game; Vampire: The Masquerade. It is a game based on collaborative license between Foxium and White Wolf Entertainment. Foxium is now live with the second game we developed, called Adelia: The Fortune Wielder, released through Microgaming. We plan to release another four to five games in 2018, so we are very busy in that respect. The next major project we have in the pipeline is a new game called; Astro Legends. It will have some original, new features we are convinced our fans will adore. We are here to break boundaries and challenge the industry with innovation, agility, and extensive expertise. Foxium is a company that has managed to grow steadily and is already creating some of the best video game products to be found on the market. Our motto has always been, that every game we release, must feel that it is the best we have created to date. We would much instead concentrate on quality, rather than quantity.

Q: The Astro Legends video slot is coming soon. What can you tell us about the game and its features?

Daniil Sanders: Our upcoming video slot is something new, and unique which we have not been able to present to the market before now. This new slot will surely be able to hold its ground in the very competitive iGaming market. Astro Legends is a video slot which has a cluster pays feature, Multiplier Wilds, ReSpins and a Bonus Game as well. The game is played with clusters of symbols on a field of 22 crystal cells and is built around storytelling. We can guarantee players an adventurous atmosphere, and an action-packed, stunning gaming experience that is shrouded in vibrant colors, with lifelike graphics, and thrilling soundtracks. The storyline revolves around two characters who interact with one another, and each has extensive bios. The female character is Lyra. She is named after one of the most famous instruments in Greek mythology. The lyre that Orpheus used to secure safe passage for Jason and the Argonauts, past the sirens. The music it created was said to be so powerful that even inanimate objects such as rocks, trees, and streams could be charmed. Lyra is at the very heart of Astro Legends: the game, and the band of the same name. Astro Legends is one of the first games we have built on our brand new engine, with the real-time 3D rendering process, and along with the adaptive soundtrack. I think this game has all the attributes to be successful. We are all looking forward to this upcoming release, but let’s wait till we put on the finishing touches!

Q: Last year, you signed a deal with Microgaming’s Quickfire platform. Are there other contracts in the works?

Daniil Sanders: Yes, you are correct, and to be honest we are proud of that, as it rewarded our hard work. The exclusive deal with Microgaming’s Quickfire platform provides Foxium with the chance to produce better games, and we can reach more operators and ultimately more fans. With the extensive distribution network available through Quickfire, we believe we are in the best position to capitalize on the growing online casino market. At the moment there are no other contracts in the works.

Q: October 2017 also saw investment from Velo Partners. What did this mean for Foxium?

Åke André: I am delighted that we have inked this deal with Velo Partners and the RNG Foundry. Foxium has in the past been approached by several investors, but for one reason or another, it never felt right, until now. With Velo Partners, we felt for the first time, that we had an investor with the same values, culture, and vision as we do at Foxium. Through Velo Partners and the RNG Foundry, we are now in a position to strengthen our company in some critical areas. Specifically, the speed of access to markets, and distribution of our games. I have great respect for the team at Velo Partners and RNG Foundry. It will be a pleasure having them on board as we take Foxium on to the next level.

Q: Your current portfolio includes several interesting themes. Which is your personal favorite and why?

Daniil Sanders: I don’t think there is one particular, favorite theme. We love them all. They all very different from each other, and each game has its own unique feature set. They were all produced with passion, and lots of work has gone into developing them to such a high standard. Nevertheless, I would say that it depends on my mood at that moment, or what kind of experience I want to have. These days, my preferred slot tends to be Amazon: the Lost Riches. Tomorrow it might be the Lucky Bakery slot. Just because it looks so yummy!

Internet Giants Face Charges For Banning Crypto Ads

Leading Internet corporations have recently prohibited crypto ads due to an increased number of scams and misleading content regarding virtual assets, especially Bitcoin. Sudden and sequent change of policies in Facebook, Google, Twitter and Yandex has caught the eye of blockchain associations from South Korea, China and Russia which have decided to file lawsuits for cartel collusion and abuse of power. Newly formed Eurasian Blockchain Association (EBA) will press charges in May but more importantly in a US jurisdiction.

An on-going BlockchainRF-2018 congress in Moscow has helped the Russian Cryptocurrency and Blockchain Association (RACIB), Korea Venture Business Association (KOVA) and Chinese Association of Cryptocurrency Investors (LBTC) to establish an exclusive cryptofund which is to finance the legal action. According to the Russian media, it is not a coincidence that global search engine, leading social media network and microblogging platform all at once called the shots to ban crypto ads, which are now supported by Russia’s biggest Internet service provider, Yandex.

RACIB’s president, Yuri Pripachkin, is convinced that sequential refusals to advertise ICOs and blockchain fundings is an attempt of cartel collusion. According to Pripachkin, four of the most influential companies in the world are using monopoly power to manipulate the market, as bans have already severely decreased revenues at crypto-based enterprises.

Legal representatives of the newly formed association are considering in which state to file the lawsuit, since each state has different views on cryptocurrencies. Moreover, companies’ managers and shareholders could also be sued, if EBA proves that they have been using e-wallet services during the ban.

In the meantime, it has also been reported that Snapchat imposed restrictions on Bitcoin ads and other multimedia companies might soon take similar actions.

Galaxy’s Lui says firm a passive investor in Wynn: report

A member of the founding family at Macau casino operator Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd says he is “not worried” if the gaming regulator in the U.S. state of Nevada wishes to make probity checks on the firm after news it was taking a 4.9-percent stake in U.S.-based Wynn Resorts Ltd for US$927.5 million. He also said Galaxy Entertainment would be a “passive” investor in Wynn Resorts.

Francis Lui Yiu Tung, deputy chairman of Galaxy Entertainment, noted to Japanese news outlet the Nikkei Asian Review in an interview in Hong Kong, that Galaxy Entertainment was a “blue-chip company”.

“We are fully transparent. The regulators always have the right to look into things that might interest them. I am not worried at all,” stated the executive.

Mr Lui said his firm was a “passive” investor in investor in Wynn Resorts and would “like to leave it at that for the moment”.

At the weekend, Paulo Martins Chan, head of Macau’s casino regulator, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, spelled out that the deal did not breach local laws on permissible levels of cross-ownership in local gaming firms.

Mr Lui said that the deal might actually help the prospects of Macau casino operator Wynn Macau Ltd in the Macau market. Wynn Resorts is the parent of Wynn Macau Ltd. Galaxy Entertainment and Wynn Macau will see the expiry in 2022 of their current Macau gaming rights. The Macau government has not yet said how it will handle the issue of possible refreshment of such rights. Some commentators have wondered whether the sale to Galaxy Entertainment of shares in the Wynn Macau’s parent business – and the turmoil in Wynn Resorts that led to the resignation of founder Steve Wynn and disposal of his own 11.8 percent stake in Wynn Resorts, amid allegations of sexual harassment spanning decades – might have a negative effect on Wynn Macau’s prospects in the Macau market.

Mr Lui said of his firm’s share buy in Wynn Resorts: “It is a win-win. Yes, I think we have given them something they value and I think in return we are investing in a very nice company.”

He added, referring to Wynn Resorts: “They have great quality assets, they are one of the better-run companies in the world and we are happy that we are able to buy a small part of them.”

The interview also gave some reaction from Mr Lui regarding his firm’s recently-announced US$500-million Boracay project and controversy about environmental issues on that Philippine holiday island.

“We support the government-initiated clean up,” Mr Lui said. “It is the crown jewel of the Philippines. It should be kept high-quality and sustainable,” he added, reiterating previous comments that construction was likely to start next year and take three years.

The published interview made no mention of Galaxy Entertainment’s ambitions for a Japan casino licence, although the firm is on public record as having expressed interest in such an opportunity.

Govt secretary doubts Galaxy Ent Boracay plan: report

The Philippines’ Environment Secretary has publicly aired his reservations regarding the choice by the country’s gaming regulator of Boracay island for a US$500-million casino resort venture involving Macau operator Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd.

Roy Cimatu said a plan to construct a gaming resort in Boracay – in partnership with local firm Leisure and Resorts World Corp – might not fit with the government’s environmental planning for the island.

It was announced on March 21 that the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp, also known as Pagcor, had granted a provisional gaming licence for Galaxy Entertainment on Boracay.

Secretary Cimatu was quoted on Wednesday by the Manila Standard newspaper as having stated that the Galaxy Entertainment scheme – and another gaming resort said to be planned for Boracay and reportedly involving Philippine entrepreneur Andrew Tan, who also has an interest in Resorts World Manila via his conglomerate Alliance Global Group Inc – would need approval from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Environmental Management Bureau.

“We will be depending on the carrying capacity [of Boracay],” Secretary Cimatu was quoted as saying, referring to the department’s decision whether to issue an environmental compliance certificate.

The national government has proposed closing Boracay to tourists for a period of many months, for what has been termed a “clean up” of the destination, although Pagcor has said that should not affect the Galaxy Entertainment scheme, which will reportedly take circa three years to build.

The narrative noise locally surrounding the Galaxy Entertainment scheme was nonetheless increased on Tuesday with a report in the Philippine Star quoting Philippine Senate president Aquilino Pimentel saying that what the news outlet termed “local government units” in areas earmarked for hosting casino resorts should have a say in such matters, and that there should also be a public consultation process.

Comments from Abram Sualog, vice mayor of Malay municipality in Boracay, reported on Monday by the Philippine Daily Inquirer newspaper, suggested the Galaxy Entertainment scheme had been approved by the municipal government without a public consultation process, in return for certain guarantees from the scheme’s promoters.

GGRAsia separately approached Galaxy Entertainment and Pagcor for comment on the claim, but had not received responses by the time this story went online.

Investor perspective

DS Kim and Sean Zhuang, analysts at brokerage JP Morgan Securities (Asia Pacific) Ltd, said in a Sunday note on Galaxy Entertainment that their institution expected the property to open “around” the year 2021.

“Site preparation work has begun and construction will start within 12 months. In our view, this indicates the opening will probably be around 2021,” the duo wrote.

“We expect the project structure to be similar to that of Melco Resorts [at City of Dreams Manila] – that is, Galaxy Entertainment will likely lease the land/building from [local partner] Leisure and Resorts World Corp and pay a leasing fee to share the profits,” the analysts added.

The project partners had been quoted as saying at last week’s ceremony issuing the provisional gaming licence, that the scheme could generate US$100 million in revenue annually.

The JP Morgan team noted in its Sunday commentary: “Project capex will be up to US$500 million (likely excluding land price, in our view), most (if not all) of which will be paid by Galaxy Entertainment.”

In other local media commentary the Philippine Inquirer reported on Monday that a senior local clergyman from the Catholic Church, an influential lobby in the Christian-majority nation, had voiced opposition to the project.

Jose Corazon Tala-oc, Bishop of Kalibo, a municipality of Boracay, was quoted by the news outlet as saying that casinos “destroy the moral fibre” of families.

In Galaxy Entertainment’s March 21 statement announcing it had been granted a provisional gaming licence for Boracay, the group said it aimed to attract the firm’s existing “affluent customers from China, Hong Kong and Macau,” among other places, and that it would create local jobs.

In other commentary, the ABS-CBN news channel quoted on Saturday criticism from Felino Palafox, a prominent Philippine architect and urban planner. He reportedly said Galaxy Entertainment’s Boracay resort “might be the wrong land use at the wrong place at the wrong time,” in the light of the central government’s announced clean up of the holiday island.

On Monday, the Manila Bulletin newspaper quoted Ricky Alegre, Assistant Secretary at the Office of Public Affairs, Communications and Special Projects for the Department of Tourism, as saying the Boracay market closure could be for as few as six months, or an even shorter time “with the help of residents”.

Macau probed 15 rogue UnionPay terminal cases in 2017

The Macau Judiciary Police last year opened a total of 15 investigations into cases involving alleged rogue UnionPay handheld terminals. Of those, 13 cases were passed to the Public Prosecutions Office for further action, Portuguese news agency Lusa and local broadcaster Radio Macau reported on Tuesday, citing data from the Macau Judiciary Police.

The police arrested 43 people as part of the investigations – 37 were from mainland China, the media outlets reported.

According to previous police reports, illegally modified handheld UnionPay terminals, also known as point of sale (POS) units, are typically tampered with in such a way that the UnionPay network identifies them as being registered and operated in mainland China, where transaction fees charged by the China UnionPay system are much lower than in Macau.

A number of investment analysts covering the Macau casino market have commented previously that purchase – and instant return in exchange for a cash refund – of high-value goods at jewellers and pawnshops in the city, was one route for mainland Chinese gamblers to skirt strict controls on export from the mainland of Chinese currency.

UnionPay International Co Ltd, a subsidiary focusing on transactions outside mainland China, including Macau and Hong Kong, missed out on around MOP2.9 million (US$359,000) in fees for the deals allegedly done on rogue terminals in Macau last year.

A tighter, real-time monitoring system for payments made via UnionPay bank cards in Macau was unveiled in December 2015 by the local monetary authority.

China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange announced in late 2017 that from January this year mainland Chinese would be restricted to an annual CNY100,000- (US$15,925-) limit per person for cash withdrawals when using overseas automated teller machines (ATMs). In the past, China’s regulatory definition of “overseas” transactions has included ones performed in Macau.

In December 2016, the Monetary Authority of Macao already had set a limit of MOP5,000 (US$626) or HKD5,000 per transaction for withdrawals in the city’s ATMs using bank cards issued by mainland China banks.

Ladbrokes Loses £71 Million Tax Case

Ladbrokes Loses £71 Million Tax Case

Ladbrokes betting group has had quite a dispute with HMRC UK tax authorities – in 2008, Ladbrokes and Deloitte (their accountant firm) deployed a corporate tax scheme by using a loophole that was shut down by the UK government later on, after it was used by numerous other organizations.

The company handed in an appeal over the £71 million ($100 million) tax case that was just rejected by the Court of Appeal. This was its third attempt at winning a rebate and it seems their decade-long battle has come to an end.

The case was with UK Tribunal Court last year already and it was rejected then, which is when Ladbrokes appealed. At first, when HMRC warned the brand that the company has failed to pay taxes, the betting group accepted to pay it. However, soon after they attempted to get the money back. They were permitted to take their case to the Court of Appeal who found that “UK tax rules prevented Ladbrokes' attempt at tax advantage.”

HMRC spokesperson commented: “We are pleased that the Court of Appeal supports HMRC’s view that Ladbrokes were attempting to avoid corporation tax. Avoidance schemes like this just don’t work and HMRC will always take firm action against them. HMRC wins nine out ten avoidance cases we take to court.”

Ladbrokes representative also weighed in, saying: “We note the court ruling. This was a case regarding taxes already paid and accounted for, so while the case may have been given against us, it has no bearing on our numbers.”

APT Vietnam plans Da Nang poker event in Oct

The first Asian Poker Tour (APT) championships in the Vietnamese coastal city of Da Nang will be staged at Cocobay Beach Resort from October 3 to 14, the poker brand said in a press release. The APT hosted an inaugural Vietnam tournament in Ho Chi Minh City in January.

The new, twelve-day poker event – the APT Vietnam Da Nang Championships 2018 – is being promoted via an agreement reached with the Win Poker club and the country’s Bridge and Poker Association, according to APT’s latest release. Win Poker’s chairman Tran Thanh Van (pictured left) and its vice president Haianh Tran (pictured centre) as well as APT general manager and executive tournament director Lloyd Fontillas (pictured right) attended a ceremony to mark the announcement.

The hosting of the Da Nang tournaments will complete APT’s 2018 calendar and mean the brand has nine festivals in total this year, the release also stated. The APT is making a return to Ho Chi Minh City this year with another poker event – the APT Vietnam Championships 2018 – to be held at the Pro Poker Club from July 11 to 22.

The Da Nang market has recently attracted the interest of several of Macau’s major junket investors.

An executive from Macau-based junket investor Tak Chun Group noted on Sunday that it would open a new VIP club under its own brand in Da Nang. The junket firm did not specify either the timeframe or the venue.

Tak Chun’s Macau market rival, Suncity Group, is investing in a casino resort project at Hoi An – a city located to the south of Da Nang – via a Hong Kong-listed entity, with an intended 34-percent stake. The project is branded as Hoiana.

Tak Chun new VIP clubs in Vietnam, MGM Cotai

Macau-based junket investor Tak Chun Group says the company will open a new VIP club under its own brand in the Vietnamese city of Da Nang, but notes that Macau remains its major market. The brand confirmed also in commentary on Sunday that it would launch a new Macau VIP club in the second half of 2018 at the recently-opened MGM Cotai resort in the city, a property promoted by MGM China Holdings Ltd.

Tak Chun did not identify the Vietnam property where it planned to operate high roller business.

“We have been operating [in Da Nang]. Now we are starting to put in resources to open a VIP club with our brand”, Vincent Li (pictured), chief operating officer of Tak Chun, told media on the sidelines of the group’s spring dinner in Macau.

Mr Li explained that Tak Chun has successfully entered various Southeast Asian markets via several routes, including what he termed collaboration with partners. But he did not elaborate.

The Tak Chun executive also said that Da Nang was attractive to the group because of the jurisdiction’s potential.

A February note from brokerage Union Gaming Securities Asia Ltd mentioned the potential of the Da Nang market in relation to Hoiana – a casino project at Hoi An, in which Tak Chun’s Macau market rival, Suncity Group, is investing, via a Hong Kong-listed entity, a 34-percent stake.

Regarding the MGM Cotai VIP facilities, Tak Chun’s Mr Li stated: “It is very likely that there will be a new VIP club opened in the second half of this year… I think I can disclose the location, it is in MGM Cotai,” he said.

Tak Chun diclined to comment when asked by GGRAsia why the VIP room would not open until the second half of the year.

The junket investor was named by analysts as one of the five junket operators expected to open a VIP club in MGM Cotai. But neither MGM China nor Tak Chun had officially confirmed this previously to the media.

In comments on the sidelines of Sunday’s event, Tsang Ka Hung, Tak Chun’s chief financial officer, said the group’s activities in Macau and overseas markets were “complementing” each other

“At the venues in Southeast Asia, there is usually a good natural environment, like beaches, sunshine and blue sky. Macau is affluent, but it is lacking things like long coastline and a comfortable climate,” said Mr Tsang.

“But Macau is still the major market. If clients wanted to go to [overseas markets], they would come to Macau first before going elsewhere,” he added.

Tak Chun launched a new VIP club on March 20 at the Okada Manila casino resort in the Philippine capital.

Bitcoin Exchanges' Web Traffic Decline by Half

Bitcoin Exchanges' Web Traffic Decline by Half
Bitcoin Exchanges' Web Traffic Decline by Half

Bitcoin skepticism continues to be a thing and this has, unfortunately, struck the global cryptocurrency market as well. January and February were particularly poor months in terms of prices and performances, driven by the sharp decline in the cryptocurrency’s value (right now, 1 BTC trades for about $8400). Besides many blows to the regulatory market and operators, now the Bitcoin exchange websites are reporting a staggering nosedive in visits per month.

February was not a good month if you're operating a major bitcoin and/or cryptocurrency exchange – the web traffic of the most vital websites of this kind rose during December and part of January, only to plummet significantly in February. On average, the visits have fallen by half.

Here is the breakdown for some of the most visited cryptocurrency exchange websites: Coinbase, which had 169.5 million visits in December 2017, only had 63.1 million visits in February – a 49% decline from January's 123.5 million. Kraken has it even worse - it fell by 56%, from January's 31.7 million to just 13.8 million in February. Similarly, Binance dropped by 54%, from 191.5 to 87.3 million.

These numbers are a symptom of the ongoing distrust in cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin who was at the center of much turmoil since it's stellar 2017. Recently we've reported on another big decline, that of Bitcoin's plummet to a two-year low. Why are people, by the looks of it, losing interest in the cryptocurrency exchange? There are a couple of factors that could've led to this. Firstly, the very poor joint price performance of all cryptocurrencies during January and February (with possibly the only exception being Litecoin who is doing well). Secondly, the impossible rise in the value during the last months of 2017 prompted too huge a number of investors to start pouring money in the Bitcoin ecosystem, which set a bar that could hardly be repeated. Consequently, it may be that the aforementioned decline in Bitcoin transactions may have been caused by the smaller volume of adoption and usage. The only upside to this emptying of the market is that fees have been brought down.

Yggdrasil Unveils Easter Island Slot

The mighty Yggdrasil has summoned all of their mythological power and, just in time for Easter, took it to Pacific's vast waters to gift us yet another future classic – the ocean-bound Easter Island video slot.

In a remote spot of the world's biggest Ocean, far off the coast of Latin America, lie the mysterious Easter Islands – known for their enormous head sculptures whose origins are yet unknown. But it's not all about mystique; this is also one of the places on Earth where human foot trod the least, keeping the place intact and as exotic as it can be. It's this rare setting where the latest reel spinning magic will unfold.

This 5-reel video slot contains expanding symbols, sticky Wilds, a host of Easter Island-related symbols such as head statues, seagulls, Maori artifacts and more. The game's central attraction is, by all means, the Symbol Swap Respin feature. In it, each win will trigger a respin and the winning symbol will replace all high value or low value symbols on the reels.

Jonas Strandman, Yggdrasil Gaming's Head of Slots, comments: “Easter Island is the perfect pep up for those with an adventurous spirit. Players will be treated to exciting winning combinations as they trigger the novel ‘symbol swap respin’ and take advantage of the expanding reels. With the big wins on offer, those who make the trip won’t be in a hurry to return to the mainland anytime soon.”

The title is developed entirely on the company's cutting-edge responsive technology making the game run smoothly on desktop devices as well as on tablets and smartphones. It will also contain the usual batch of Yggdrasil's promotion tools, BOOST.

Take a look at the official game trailer:

Wynn shareholder reshuffle not to hurt Macau market: DICJ

Wynn shareholder reshuffle not to hurt Macau market: DICJ

The recent shareholder reshuffle at U.S.–based casino operator Wynn Resorts Ltd – the parent company of Wynn Macau Ltd – will “not have an impact on Macau’s gaming sector,” said on Friday the city’s casino regulator, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, also known by its Portuguese acronym DICJ.

The regulator stated in a press release it would “continue to closely monitor the situation, analysing and evaluating new developments, in order to ensure the sustainable development of Macau’s gaming sector.”

It was announced on Thursday by Wynn Resorts that Macau casino operator Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd was acquiring an estimated 4.9-percent stake in the former. Wynn Resorts also announced on Thursday that the company’s ex-chairman and chief executive Steve Wynn had reached an agreement with “two long-term institutional investors, both of whom are currently investors in Wynn Resorts”, to sell his remaining shares in the company.

In its Friday statement, the Macau casino regulator said it had been informed beforehand by the Wynn group of Mr Wynn’s intention to sell his shares in Wynn Resorts.

The Macau government “has been closely following up these events and has held multiple meetings with [Wynn Macau Ltd], maintaining close communication” on this matter with the firm, the DICJ statement said.

The document did not directly mention the acquisition by Galaxy Entertainment of a holding of almost 5 percent in Wynn Resorts. But the release did state that, “with the information currently in hand, there has been no breach of clause 10 of article 17 of Law 16/2001.”

The statute says that neither a Macau gaming concessionaire, nor any Macau gaming concessionaire’s shareholder with a stake of 5 percent or more in that business, can control a stake of 5 percent or more in any other local gaming concessionaire, be it directly or indirectly.

In a note issued on Friday, brokerage Sanford C.Bernstein Ltd said that the acquisition of Wynn Resorts shares by Galaxy Entertainment was an “important” event to both the Macau gaming industry and to the broader gaming market.

“Wynn Resorts and Galaxy Entertainment may be looking at collaborating on future development opportunities in Asia, with Japan being the critical development initiative,” said analysts Vitaly Umansky, Zhen Gong and Cathy Huang of Sanford Bernstein.

They added: “By jointly bidding for Japan (along with Japanese partners) the parties would be much stronger contenders together than separately. Such a joint bid likely would not have occurred under Steve Wynn.”

Both Galaxy Entertainment and Wynn Resorts have shown strong interest in bidding for a gaming business in Japan, as local authorities move to regulate casino gambling in the country.

The Sanford Bernstein note also said that Galaxy Entertainment “may use its 4.9 percent stake as a potential blocking party/influencer of any future attempted acquisition of Wynn Resorts”, or became “a potential acquirer of Wynn Resorts/Wynn Macau”. The brokerage described Galaxy Entertainment as “one of the few gaming companies that would have the financial wherewithal to execute” a potential purchase of Wynn Resorts.

“We do not believe that Galaxy Entertainment would be a buyer of Wynn Resorts in totality, but with China/Macau government approval a Galaxy Entertainment acquisition of Wynn Macau Ltd assets would create the leading Macau gaming company,” the brokerage said.

The institution added that if an acquisition of Wynn Macau Ltd by Galaxy Entertainment were to occur, the former’s gaming concession could be given or sold to a party approved by the Macau government, or simply be eliminated.

Allan Zeman, chairman and independent non-executive director of Wynn Macau Ltd, told Hong Kong media i-CABLE News Channel on Friday that Galaxy Entertainment and Wynn Resorts “could cooperate on potential projects in the future”.

New Sci Games slot in Macau, other Apac markets soon

Casino equipment supplier and lottery services provider Scientific Games Corp has chosen the Macau market for a world debut of its new “Jin Ji Bao Xi” slot product. The company declined to say where it had been installed. The machine will however also appear soon in casinos in Asia-Pacific (Apac) markets, namely the Philippines and Cambodia.

“Some more” Macau venues would be having the product, said Ken Jolly, Scientific Games vice president and managing director of Asia, in a comment to GGRAsia. “Within two weeks, it will be installed in the Philippines and by next month in Cambodia,”  he added.

In a press release on Thursday, Scientific Games had said the installation of “Jin Ji Bao Xi” in Macau followed “the success of the company’s ‘Duo Fu Duo Cai’  family [of games] link in Macau”.

“’Jin Ji Bao Xi’ is the latest multi-denominational, progressive linked jackpot from Scientific Games’ new offering of the Echo Fortunes base game on the Dualo cabinet, which debuted at the Macau Gaming Show last November,” the release added.

The firm further noted the new product had “exclusive content and design for Asian players”.

Everi teams with Nevada indy studio on slot content

Everi Holdings Inc, a U.S.-based specialist in cash handling technology and electronic game content for the casino industry, says it has a partnership with bZillions Inc for the development of “new gaming content”.

A Wednesday release from Everi described the other party as an independent game design studio based in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the United States. The tie up will focus on creating games for Everi’s “mForce” electronic slot game platform.

According to the release, bZillions will develop content for at least 10 new games over the next 12 months for several of the Everi’s newest gaming cabinets, including the Empire MPX and the Empire 5527.

“bZillions has a track record of creating product that drives increased performance on all sorts of different platforms,” said Dean Ehrlich, executive vice president and gaming business leader for Everi, in a prepared statement contained in the announcement.

In other developments, analyst Brian McGill of Telsey Advisory Group LLC said in a Sunday note that Everi expected to increase its slot sales in 2018 by 10 percent year-on-year, to nearly 4,000 units.

“We think this is realistic and believe it is possible there could be upside,” stated the analyst. “In the game operations segment, the company expects 7 percent to 8 percent growth in the installed base with better yields in each quarter than the prior year,” added Mr McGill.

Try Out House of Doom At Playojo Casino

Here's an unlikely trend taking over the world of online gambling: metal music seems to be the order of the day! We've just reported on Nita Strauss and Gary Holt joining Metal Casino which made the metalheads in our community delighted. Now we are asking you to pay close attention to Playojo Casino who, for several more days, has one very exclusive game for you to take for a spin.

Until March 26th, Playojo will be welcoming their players with an exclusive offer that is playing the latest video slot signed by the award-winning, Play'n GO: House of Doom! If the name of the game isn't giving away much, we'll tell you: it's not in fact a horror-themed game, but a tribute to doom metal – a slower and more sinister flavor of metal – and its main proponents. House of Doom has been created with the help of one of the most successful doom metal bands – Candlemass. The Swedish band (don't be surprised, Scandinavia is leading the way in the metal world of today) was established in 1984 and has been a force to be reckoned with since its inception. It has now lent its legendary sound to the game's soundtrack, creating a unique doom atmosphere that is unparalleled in any other slot game.

The visuals of the game compliment the aesthetics of doom metal very nicely. Set against the eerie backdrops in purple and black, high-quality graphics look stunning on any device. The reels are filled with lower-end symbols in Gothic fonts while colorful high value symbols are comprised of the sorceress that works like expanding symbol, crucifix, goat's skull head, burning rose, pentagram and other vicious symbols. Three game logo scatter symbols trigger the extra spin mode during which the music of Candlemass truly begins to rock out. You will also be able to look forward to bonus games with multipliers!

Play'n GO's CEO, Johan Tornqvist, comments: “House of Doom sees a collaboration and marketing scope not seen before in the gaming industry, and we’re looking forward to bringing exclusive events and materials to our fans in the coming months. Our artists and developers have managed to bring an innovative concept to life which will appeal to heavy metal fans, as well as those simply wanting a top-quality slots experience. It has been a pleasure working with the renowned Candlemass on the launch. The band have contributed heavily to the creative process and we believe this partnership paves the way for a new way of marketing slots in future.”

The new title will be released to the public soon enough – we will keep you posted on the details…

Philippine casino plan a work in progress: Landing boss

A plan by casino resort investor Landing International Development Ltd to build a family-friendly resort with gaming facilities in the Philippines is a “work in progress”, said the chairman and executive director of the Hong Kong-listed firm, Yang Zhihui (pictured centre). Mr Yang’s firm is the promoter of the recently-launched South Korean casino resort Jeju Shinhwa World.

Mr Yang noted that at a recent casino industry conference in the United Kingdom, Andrea Domingo, the head of the Philippine gaming regulator, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp, a body also known as Pagcor, had mentioned that the country was not accepting any fresh applications for casino licences.

“But in fact, our application [for such licence] has already been under negotiation last year… On this business, it is still a work of progress,” Mr Yang said in response to a question from GGRAsia at a Wednesday press briefing held at the group’s new South Korean resort on Jeju island.

Mr Yang said he had meetings last year with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte regarding possible development of a “theme park integrated resort in that country.

“We are not engaged in pure gaming projects – I think our theme is to build a world-class entertainment and leisure resort for families. I’ve told President Duterte about this plan of [building] a theme park; [something] which the Philippines does not have; nor does the country boast any large-scale water parks. He was very interested in our concept,” Mr Yang said.

Landing International is hosting on Thursday what it terms a grand opening ceremony for its Jeju Shinhwa World casino resort, and has invited several local officials to attend. An outdoor entertainment zone called “Shinhwa Water Park” is due to open at the resort in the summer, along with 538 self-branded hotel rooms under the moniker Jeju Shinhwa World Shinhwa Resort. By the year 2020, the group aims to open a Four Seasons Resort and Spa, with about 200 guest rooms, and theme park called Lionsgate Movie World.

Southeast Asia prospects

“With the completion of the Four Seasons and the second phase of the theme park, it will basically mark the completion of all the works at our [Jeju Shinhwa World] plot,” said Mr Yang in his Wednesday commentary.

“By then, according to our plan, this resort project is done. We may not start any construction afresh,” Mr Yang added. The Jeju casino resort site covers an area of 2.5 million square metres (26.9 million sq feet).

The Landing International chairman said his firm had no plans to acquire any new land plots on Jeju island, but is exploring opportunities for developing so-called integrated resort projects in Southeast Asia. The term “integrated resort” is an industry phrase for large-scale venues typically combining shopping, entertainment, conference facilities and a casino.

The gaming facility at the group’s new Jeju island resort – branded Jeju Shinhwa World Landing Casino – opened on February 25 inside one of the accommodation wings of the development, called Jeju Shinhwa World Marriott Resort.

The other currently-operating facilities at Jeju Shinhwa World include: the luxury hotels Jeju Shinhwa World Landing Resort, Jeju Shinhwa World Marriott Resort and Somerset Jeju Shinhwa World; Landing Convention Centre; a K-pop themed zone called “YG Republique”; Shinhwa Theme Park, which opened at the end of September; and a shopping area branded as “Shinhwa Shoppes”.
