Macau gaming tax revenue up 18pct in first quarter

The Macau government’s take from direct taxes on gaming increased by 17.7 percent year-on-year in the first three months of 2018, show provisional data disclosed on Thursday by the city’s Financial Services Bureau.

The city collected approximately MOP26.30 billion (US$3.25 billion) in fiscal revenues from direct taxes on gaming in the first quarter this year. That compares with MOP22.34 billion collected in the same period of 2017.

Direct taxes from gaming brought in 84.5 percent of the Macau government’s total revenue in the three months to March 31, which stood at MOP31.12 billion.

Macau’s aggregate casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the first quarter was MOP76.51 billion, up 20.5 percent from the prior-year period, according to official data from the city’s gaming regulator.

Macau levies an effective tax rate of 39 percent on casino GGR – 35 percent in direct government tax, and the remainder in a number of levies to pay for a range of community good causes.

The Macau government fiscal surplus for the January-March period was up by 20.8 percent year-on-year to nearly MOP15.72 billion.

The city’s government forecasts GGR will be MOP230 billion in 2018. It has said it expects to collect a total of MOP82.41 billion in fiscal revenue from direct taxes on gaming this year.

The Macau government has a track record of taking a conservative approach when estimating gaming-related tax revenue in its yearly budgets.

Lincoln Casino Pays Out $96K On Memorial Day

While honoring the brave men and women that fought for his country, a player started the Memorial Day weekend with an amazing winning streak totaling $96,040 on a single spin at Lincoln Casino. According to casino manager, Ryan Wilson, there were a lot of happy players at the venue last weekend, but only Darren G. managed to trigger two small jackpots so to speak, making this important holiday a day to remember.

Darren joined on Friday, May 25th and started by winning a tempting amount of $11,760 on Lucky 7s. Although he played a highly volatile progressive jackpot game for a couple of hours, he kept hitting small wins. Nevertheless, after landing three purple 7s with two Wilds, the game paid $240 with a 49X multiplier, totaling $11k. Since he got the necessary boost to switch to another game, Darren chose WTG’s five-reel slot, Mile High. The slot features an airplane theme and carries a couple of bonuses and free spins with 16X multipliers. The combination seemed right and he decided to give it a go, said Darren G.

A couple of games of roulette and video poker followed, before it was time to have a shot at Mile High. Approximately 45 minutes later, while playing a free spin with a $6.25 bet, Darren struck five of the cheeky Pilot symbols on three bet lines with two Wild symbols on each line. The Wild symbols added a 16X multiplier, landing $32,000 on each of the three lines, plus some useful change on five others. In total, the lucky punter won $96,040!

They say that persistence pays off and in this case it is perfectly true. Darren has been playing at the site for about five years and we couldn't be happier for him getting this huge win, said Wilson. Let’s face it, nailing a massive payout from a small bet is very rare, and our entire team is proud of him. The casino hosts an enormous collection of signature slots and premium casino games from WGS, which just launched Goblin's Gold. If you join until June 10th, you can win 50 free spins on the ghoulish new addition – no deposit required (coupon: GOBLIN50LC).

Casino op Landing Int proposes capital reorganisation

The board of casino resort investor Landing International Development Ltd is to propose a capital reorganisation comprising of a fifty-into-one share consolidation and a capital reduction, the firm said in a Tuesday press release.

The capital reorganisation is expected to take effect on July 4, subject to certain conditions, including obtaining shareholders’ approval, said the Hong Kong-listed company.

Landing International operates the Jeju Shinhwa World casino resort on South Korea’s Jeju island. The company is also applying for a gaming licence to develop a casino resort at Entertainment City, in Manila, the Philippines.

As a result of the proposed capital reorganisation the number of issued shares will be reduced from 146,744,935,542 shares to 2,934,898,710 consolidated shares and the par value of each issued share will remain at HKD0.01 (US$0.00127).

“The company believes that a higher absolute share price following the consolidation will appeal to a broader base of institutional and sophisticated investors,” said Landing International.

It added: “Greater participation by such investors, especially those with longer investment horizons, is likely to reduce the volatility of the company’s share price.”

The company also proposed to change the board lot size for trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange from 60,000 shares to 1,200 new consolidated shares.

“Maintaining the par value of its shares at the low value will allow the company greater flexibility in setting the issue price for future equity fund raising exercises, while the change in the board lot size would maintain the trading amount for each board lot at a reasonable level for the public to invest in its new shares,” explained the casino investor.

Macau GDP up in 1Q helped by gaming, tourist spend

Macau GDP up in 1Q helped by gaming, tourist spend

Macau’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 9.2 percent year-on-year in real terms in the first quarter this year, an expansion fuelled by an increase in visitors’ spending and in “exports of gaming services”, show the latest data from the city’s Statistics and Census Service.

Macau gaming services are counted as exports when calculating the city’s GDP, as most of the consumers of such services are inbound tourists.

In its latest release, the statistics service stated that such exports rose by 16.5 percent year-on-year during the first quarter, a growth rate similar to the previous quarter. In the January to March period, exports of non-gaming tourism services grew by 19.6 percent.

Total exports of services – described by the statistics service as the “major driving force” for the city’s economic growth – expanded by 16 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, a rise supported by an increase in the number of visitor arrivals and of spending of such tourists, the government release stated.

In a World Economic Outlook report released in April, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said it expected Macau’s GDP to grow by 7.0 percent this year and 6.1 percent in 2019.

Macau’s GDP increased by 9.1 percent year-on-year in real terms for full-year 2017, helped by increases in exports and services and in investment, official records show. The 2017 GDP result was the first annual rise since 2013.

Macau’s GDP performance trend in recent years has coincided with the performance of casino gross gaming revenue (GGR)  in the city, highlighting the importance of the gaming sector to the local economy. The gaming business was negatively affected by a slump in GGR that began in June 2014 and extended for two years, which investment analysts covering the casino industry said coincided with an anti-corruption campaign in mainland China.

Dead rail link not issue for Genting Sentosa: Maybank

Dead rail link not issue for Genting Sentosa: Maybank

Malaysia’s decision to scrap an expensive high-speed rail link between its capital Kuala Lumpur and the neighbouring city-state of Singapore should not have a negative impact on Genting Hotel Jurong, a facility built by Genting Singapore Plc to support its operations at casino venue Resorts World Sentosa (pictured).

So said on Tuesday Samuel Yin Shao Yang, an analyst at Maybank IB Research, in response to an email from GGRAsia.

Genting Singapore had a first-phase opening in April 2015 for the 557-room hotel, located approximately 15.4 kilometres (9.6 miles) from Resorts World Sentosa on the Singapore side of the border. Some commentators queried the decision to build fresh sleeping accommodation so far from the resort and to bring those guests in by bus.

But Mr Yin had pointed out at the time that the location at Jurong Lake was close to the proposed terminal for the rail link, at Jurong East. Many customers of Singapore’s two casino venues – Resorts World Sentosa, and Marina Bay Sands, the latter promoted by Las Vegas Sands Corp – are said to come from neighbouring Malaysia.

Maybank’s Mr Yin told us on Tuesday regarding Genting Hotel Jurong in the aftermath of the rail link cancellation: “I am not overly concerned that it will be a white elephant.”

“Genting Hotel Jurong is located in between the second link bridge [to Malaysia] and Resorts World Sentosa. Many tour buses from Malaysia would pass Genting Hotel Jurong anyway. In short, I think the hotel will still be viable in the long run,” he added.

Malaysia’s 92-year-old prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad – who returned to power in a general election in early May, amid disquiet about the management of the economy under the leadership of his predecessor Najib Razak – said on Monday that the rail link would have cost his country MYR110 billion (US$27.6 billion) and “would not earn us a single cent”.

NetEnt Player Strikes Whopping €3.7M Jackpot

Leading provider of premium casino content with offices all around the world, NetEnt, has successfully continued its renowned jackpot streak, after a player from Sweden managed to strike a gigantic win, totaling €3,773,845.27 while playing the company’s groundbreaking Mega FortuneTM slot at LeoVegas! According to the supplier, the winner had staked only €4.80 before hitting the immense sum, at the beginning of May. By announcing the latest big win, software giants have continued to lead in jackpot games with massive millionaire-making prizes, paying already an astonishing sum of €19,799,183 in 2018 alone!

Chief product officer at the company, Henrik Fagerlund, said that jackpots are an integral component of NetEnt’s business strategy and that seeing players win life-changing amounts always make them happy, as it confirms the groups dedication and good work. Providing exceptional gaming experience, as well as moments like this is the very essence of iGaming, and the company hopes that good luck will follow everyone during the summer.

Mega FortuneTM is definitely among the most popular online slots of all times, as only a few other games have managed to trigger so many jackpots, including Mega Moolah, Hall of Gods and Mega Fortune Dreams. The game’s secret lies within choosing bets and lines but also optional multi-coin line bets. Players can place up to 4 coins on each active line, toggle the 'bet level' and reconfigure the lines manually.

Earlier this year, on January 23rd, another player made his first millions after striking massive €2,553,604.67 on the same game, only a few days after signing-up at the venue SlotsMillion. A UK-based punter, who remained completely anonymous has actually won the first progressive jackpot in 2018, announcing an entire streak of further grand prizes, such as the one from May.

Anti-gambling addiction bill clears Diet lower chamber

A bill on gambling addiction counter measures passed Japan’s lower parliamentary chamber – the House of Representatives – on Friday, according to GGRAsia’s Japan correspondent. The bill was sent to the upper house – the House of Councillors – for further discussion and voting.

The parliamentary membership of Japan’s two governing parties – the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its smaller partner Komeito – and the opposition Japan Restoration Party jointly submitted a bill a fortnight ago to the country’s parliament – a body also known as the Diet – on the issue of anti-gambling addiction.

Gambling addiction counter measures had been trailed by lawmakers, investment analysts and commentators as a necessary precursor to the arrival of casino resorts in Japan.

The House of Representatives started last week discussing the Integrated Resorts (IR) Implementation Bill, which sets the broad regulatory framework for the establishment of a casino industry in the country.

Japan’s governing parties expect the IR Implementation Bill to pass both chambers of the Diet before the official ending on June 20 of the current parliamentary session.

The IR Implementation Bill – as submitted to the Diet - proposes an initial cap of three casino resorts nationwide, and a fixed tax rate of 30 percent on any casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) generated by that country’s proposed gaming resorts. It sets a JPY6,000 (US$54) casino entry fee for locals for 24-hour access, and limits casino visits by Japanese to three times a week and 10 times per month in aggregate.

Mood music with Interblock Stadium for player thrills

GGRAsia
Mood music with Interblock Stadium for player thrills

Interblock DD, a specialist in the supply of casino electronic table games (ETGs), has updated its Interblock Stadium product to add ‘mood’ music for different phases of the table games that can be played on the platform.

Michael Hu (pictured), Interblock’s vice president of Asia, gave as an example music to accompany roulette.

“At betting time – maybe 60 seconds – the music can be more quiet,” he told GGRAsia at the brand’s stand during the recent Global Gaming Expo (G2E) Asia 2018, a casino industry trade show and conference held in Macau.

“When the ball is launched, the music can get more energetic; and when the ball drops into the pocket, there is different music there as well. When the game is over, there is a different tune as well,” he noted.

Mr Hu said the move was inspired in part by feedback from customers in the Vietnam market, who noted players there like to have an emotional connection with the game.

“It’s a great idea: simple but effective,” Mr Hu observed.

Interblock Stadium can offer up to five game types: mechanical roulette, mechanical sic bo, virtual roulette, virtual baccarat, and keno.

“For large casinos, the product can feature… dealer-assisted games,” stated Mr Hu. “But for the Macau market we have an LT Game [Ltd] patent restriction, so we can’t do live dealers here. But outside of Macau, we do that everywhere,” he added.

In March, Interblock announced it had completed it’s first stadium-style installation in a South Korea casino. In early May, the firm said it had expanded its footprint in Asia with installation of new electronic table game units in Vietnam and the Philippines.

Another product popular in the emerging Vietnam market is Interblock’s StarBar player terminal for use on bar tops, said Mr Hu. Each play station can either be used as an automated standalone bar top gaming machine or can be connected to a wider system in order to offer dealer-assisted or automated games; including those based on dice, cards and roulette.

Also on display at G2E Asia was Interblock’s MiniStar Roulette. It is available with either five, six, eight or 10 seats, and with either a single-zero or double-zero roulette wheel.  The product incorporates all of the same features of its larger cousin, Interblock’s Diamond Roulette. The difference is that the smaller footprint makes is suitable for smaller venues, and also appeals to those players that want to watch the wheel closely as it spins.

“We make the distance between the seat and the centre of the machine very small, so people can watch closely the spinning of the wheel. Some people like that,” noted Mr Hu.

The executive said the product was “very very popular” in Mocha Clubs, electronic gaming parlours in Macau operated by Macau casino licensee Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd.

“We have supplied 10 sets of this, with one set offering 10 player stations… so 100 stations in total,” stated Mr Hu.

US Justice Department Investigates Bitcoin Price Manipulation
US Justice Department Investigates Bitcoin Price Manipulation

Bloomberg is reporting that the US Justice Department is preparing an in-depth criminal investigation concerning the big fluctuations of Bitcoin and Ethereum prices in the last 6 months. Bitcoin's story was one of ups and downs for a long time now and this prompted a full-on market manipulation probe. For this endeavor, the Justice Department will be assisted by numerous other agencies and helped by US Commodities Futures Trading Commission which has declared cryptocurrencies as such.

This investigation will concern such illegitimate practice and processes as spoofing, which influences the value of the currency and its price by placing false orders on exchanges that are then withdrawn. The increased volume of placing orders prompt people to buy and sell the currency in larger amounts. Another form of market and price manipulation is wash trading, which creates the illusion of increased market activity by having only certain members of the market trade the currency between themselves.

John Griffin, University of Texas finance warns against the risks in the market of digital currencies: “There’s very little monitoring of manipulative trading, spoofing and wash trading. It would be easy to spoof this market.”

Trading of cryptocurrencies is divided into a fragmented platform all across the globe, many of them unlicensed and unregistered. Due to the meteoric rise of Bitcoin in 2017 when it reached the value of almost $20,000 in December after starting out below $1,000 in January, thousands of people jumped on the investment bandwagon without being fully aware of what this entails in reality. Experts on the matter say that there are several key reasons why digital currencies are prone to fraud: huge price swings that makes valuations relative, a lack of regulations such as those that stocks have and skepticism regarding the idea that exchanges pursue cheaters.

Last week, Bitcoin fell below the $8,000 mark once again and the news of the investigation that broke out on Thursday further helped drop the cryptocurrency's value to below $7500. Its value has nosedived more than 20% since it peaked on May 4th. Despite that, cryptocurrencies still continue to be all the rage in some regions of the world and among the Bitcoin loyalists – but some countries like China and Japan have taken stern measures towards strict regulation or, in the case of China, a complete ban of cryptocurrency exchanges.

Tiger Palace monthly break-even 3Q: Silver Heritage

The Tiger Palace Resort Bhairahawa casino venue (pictured) in Nepal is “approaching monthly break-even,” which is “expected during the third quarter” this year, said Australia-listed boutique casino operator Silver Heritage Group Ltd. The company provided the information in a business update following its annual general meeting on Friday.

Silver Heritage launched the Nepal property – its first purpose-built and majority-controlled venue, near the border with the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh – at the end of the third quarter last year, and received its casino operating licence in late December.

The firm also outlined in a fresh business update that it had reached an agreement with Rajendra Bajgain, formerly a minority local partner for Tiger Palace Resort Bhairahawa. Earlier this year, Silver Heritage reported it was involved in litigation with Mr Bajgain but was seeking a non-court solution to the issues.

The group additionally reported that it had reached agreement with a Nepal consortium for co-ownership of land for a possible additional Nepal resort referred to as “Tiger Palace Resort Jhapa”. Jhapa is a district of eastern Nepal, near the country’s border with the Indian states of Bihar and of Sikkim, and a relatively short distance from India’s contiguous border with Bangladesh. The firm had flagged in a September business update its interest in having a new Nepal resort.

The boutique casino operator also runs the Millionaire’s Club and Casino in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, and the Phoenix International Club, near Hanoi, in Vietnam.

Commenting on the group’s overall performance so far in the current quarter, Silver Heritage’s chief executive Mike Bolsover told shareholders in prepared remarks on Friday: “The first seven weeks of trading in the second quarter 2018 have been much stronger than the first quarter 2018, following a challenging first 90 days in the year at the mature properties of Phoenix [International Club] in Vietnam and The Millionaires Club [and Casino] in Kathmandu, Nepal, and during the initial ramp up at Tiger Palace.”

The CEO reiterated information from the group’s first-quarter earnings statement in late April; namely that first-quarter total adjusted earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) had been “negative US$1,943,000, with US$1,809,000 of this being cash drag from the ramp up at Tiger Palace, though April 2018 was a positive month of operating cash flow at group level.

Mr Bolsover further stated: “We have also had a strong May to date, particularly in Vietnam and in Kathmandu.”

At Friday’s annual meeting, the group’s interim chairman Matthew Hunter said the firm had been “working through” some “transitional issues”.

He stated in prepared remarks: “It is clear that the relationship with our local partner in Nepal has run its course. Several high quality parties have expressed interest in partnering with us in Nepal. The company is actively engaged in discussions in this regard and will update the market as and when further progress has been made on this.”

Mr Hunter also thanked David Green, who recently resigned as non-executive chairman, and Richard Barker, whose departure as an independent non-executive director was announced on Monday.

The interim chairman described them as “the two remaining non-executive directors from the time of the company’s initial public offering” but gave no detail on the circumstances of their respective exits.

Intertops Launches Ogre Empire In $1000 Raffle

As Monday, May 28th, gets closer, folks at Intertops are getting ready to blow away their players with two huge events, including an entirely new game from Betsoft and a $1000 slots raffle! This Memorial Day, the popular venue for online gaming will launch Ogre Empire and throw a special slot tournament to honor the brave men and women who have died fighting for their country.

It is important to remember the soldiers that have fought to protect our country, said Intertops’ manager. However, having a little fun is always a good way to lift spirits. The memorial Slots Day Raffle will include three designated games from the same supplier: A Night In Paris, Fire & Steel and True Sheriff. Players can earn tickets automatically on Monday, but there is an additional free raffle ticket for every 10 spins with a wager of $0.60 or more. The games were chosen due to their “protect-and-serve” genre in different periods in history. Five winners will claim $1000 in prizes!

The latest addition to Betsoft’s versatile gaming portfolio is launching on Monday. Ogre Empire is a fairytale slot, featuring a Shrek-like creature that occupies a kingdom day and night. During the day, scared townsfolk hide and leave the reels, due to the ogre’s horrible temper. In the meantime, his rage triggers supplementary rewards but only until he falls asleep, making the townsfolk slip out of hiding. There are two extraordinary features, including a pair of wild flowers – Day Bloom Wild and Night Bloom Wild. During the day, the flower can spread to up to three other adjacent symbols, whereas the nocturnal version shoots its glowing spores on other symbols, turning them wild as well. To double the payout, players will have to land the Joker in a winning combination.

Intertops is giving away 10 free spins on the new game to all players that have made a deposit in the last 30 days. Take the opportunity and win up to $250 until June 2nd, but don’t forget to roll over 30X before you make a withdrawal of free spin winnings. Best of luck!

Casino operator Genting Malaysia 1Q profit up 11 pct

Casino operator Genting Malaysia 1Q profit up 11 pct

Profit at casino operator Genting Malaysia Bhd rose 10.6 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, it said in a Thursday filing to Bursa Malaysia.

Such profit was MYR358.2 million (US$89.9 million), compared to MYR323.9 million in the prior-year period. The group announced however that first-quarter 2017 results had been subject to some restatement, due to some change in accounting practices.

The group’s total revenue grew by 7.9 percent to nearly MYR2.40 billion in the first quarter, from MYR2.22 billion a year earlier.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) improved by 7.5 percent, to MYR607.7 million, from MYR565.2 million.

The company has casino operations at Resorts World Genting (pictured), Malaysia’s only licensed casino destination;  in the United Kingdom and Egypt; and in the United States and the Bahamas.

On a consolidated basis in those markets, Genting Malaysia recorded for the period gaming revenue of nearly MYR2.04 billion.

The group includes gaming revenue in its “leisure and hospitality” revenue, which also covers “hotels, food and beverage, theme parks, retail, entertainment attractions, tours and travel related services and other supporting services”.

In Malaysia, such revenue for the period was MYR1.60 billion, up 19 percent from the prior-year period. In the United Kingdom and Egypt, which are twinned for accounting purposes, such revenue was MYR412.4 million, down 12 percent year-on-year; and in the U.S. and the Bahamas, it amounted to MYR346.4 million, a decline of 9 percent from a year earlier.

The total revenue for the leisure and hospitality segment in the first quarter was MYR2.36 billion, an 8 percent improvement from the prior-year period.

The firm said the Malaysian leisure and hospitality business achieved higher revenue and adjusted EBITDA to the tune of 19 percent and 22 percent respectively in the first quarter, “primarily contributed by overall higher business volumes”. Adjusted EBITDA at Resorts World Genting stood at MYR533.7 million in the three months ended March 31.

The company added: “The improved performance was mainly attributable to the opening of new facilities and attractions under the Genting Integrated Tourism Plan (GITP), which have been well received.”

Genting Malaysia said Resorts World Genting had received 6.5 million visitors during the quarter, which it described as a “commendable” 26-percent growth from the first quarter 2017, “despite ongoing development works at the resort”.

The company added regarding Malaysian operations: “The group remains committed to intensifying database marketing efforts to optimise yield management and improve operational efficiencies and service delivery at the resort.”

Japanese brokerage Nomura said in a Thursday note that the EBITDA margin at Genting Malaysia’s domestic operations “remains resilient as visitations, [gaming] volumes” continue to grow.

“For the second straight quarter, improving visitation and higher gaming volumes resulted in revenue/EBITDA up 19 percent/22 percent year-on-year and flat EBITDA margins at its Malaysia operations as capacity utilisation at its new facilities at Genting Highlands ramps up,” wrote analysts Tushar Mohata and Rahul Dohare.

The Malaysian property has already opened several new facilities and attractions, and Genting Malaysia’s management has said it expects to open the 20th Century Fox World Malaysia theme park in the second half of this year, according to Nomura’s note.

Tax policy

Referring to a possible change in Malaysia government tax policy applicable to Genting Malaysia’s domestic operations following this month’s general election, Maybank IB Research analyst Samuel Yin Shao Yang said in a Thursday note: “If the 6 percent Goods and Services Tax is zero-rated (effective 1 June 2018) and gaming tax rates are not hiked, we estimate that our earnings estimates and target may even be boosted by 10 percent per annum and 8 perent respectively.”

U.K. and Egypt operations for Genting Malaysia overall recorded lower revenue and adjusted EBITDA, “mainly due to overall lower volume of business and hold percentage from its premium gaming segment,” the firm said in commentary to its results.

In the U.S. and the Bahamas, the group’s lower revenues judged year-on-year were “largely attributable” to the strengthening of the Malaysian ringgit against the U.S. dollar.

“Excluding the impact of the foreign exchange movement, revenue from the U.S. and Bahamas operations increased by 3 percent,” stated the group, adding “the group remains focused on the development of the US$400 million expansion at Resorts World New York City”.

In those two markets, Genting Malaysia said its adjusted EBITDA improved by 57 percent to MYR64.8 million mainly due to “lower operating losses” from the Resorts World Bimini operations in the Bahamas “as a result of cost rationalisation efforts at the resort”.

The same day, Genting Malaysia’s parent, Genting Bhd, also reported its first-quarter results.

The parent said overall revenue was MYR5.25 billion, an increase of 10.1 percent compared with the prior-year quarter. The parent added that Singapore casino venue Resorts World Sentosa had contributed higher revenue and adjusted EBITDA in the period, “on the back of healthy growth in volumes across all major business segments”.

It added the Lunar New Year period saw a “bustling VIP rolling volume” at Resorts World Sentosa, “notwithstanding a calibrated credit risk model”. The property had averaged 18,000 visitors per day during the period, added the parent.

The operator of Resorts World Sentosa, Genting Singapore Plc, reported its first-quarter results to the Singapore Exchange on May 10.

Share placement pressures IGT stock: analysts

The share placement exercise known as a “variable forward transaction” announced by the controlling shareholder of gaming and lottery supplier International Game Technology Plc (IGT) has put some pressure on IGT’s stock, despite the better-than-expected first quarter operating results for the business, say two brokerages.

IGT announced on Monday – in conjunction with its first-quarter earnings filing – that the De Agostini SpA, IGT’s majority shareholder, had the agreement with Credit Suisse International relating to 18 million IGT shares.

According to a Monday press release by IGT, the exercise provides De Agostini with a predefined minimum value for the underlying IGT ordinary shares while allowing it to retain “any meaningful benefits from any appreciation in the value of the underlying IGT ordinary shares”.

Shares of IGT have been trading lower after Monday’s filing. Shares of the company on the New York Stock Exchange closed at US$27.55 in Wednesday’s trading, down 3.2 percent on the day.

The stock pressure “can be almost entirely attributed to the variable forward transaction entered into by IGT majority shareholder,” suggested analyst John DeCree of brokerage Union Gaming Securities LLC.

“Fundamentals were in line with our expectations in the quarter but selling pressure on the transaction announcement overshadowed the first-quarter beat,” wrote Mr DeCree in a Wednesday note.

IGT on Monday reported that consolidated revenue increased by 5 percent year-on-year in the first three months of 2018, while its operating income jumped 65 percent. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) were US$436 million, up 18 percent from the prior-year period.

“If not for the variable forward transaction entered into by IGT’s controlling shareholder, we believe shares would have responded very well to the fundamentals and the outlook presented in IGT’s first quarter 2018,” said analysts Carlo Santarelli and Danny Valoy at Deutsche Bank Securities Inc.

“Conceptually, we understand today’s stock action, as, in its simplest form, the De Agostini transaction creates a 13.2 million liquidity event on a public float of [about] 101 million shares,” added the Deutsche Bank team. “Thus, we believe today’s share response is entirely a function of stock supply / demand dynamics.”

They added: “We believe this transaction clears the decks for a much needed infusion of long term oriented institutional investor support in the stock.”

In connection with the variable forward transaction, IGT said on Tuesday that it had been advised that Credit Suisse or its affiliates had borrowed 13.2 million IGT ordinary shares from third-party stock lenders and sold such shares at a price of US$28.25 apiece in an underwritten public offering through Credit Suisse Securities (USA) LLC.

The Credit Suisse group will borrow an additional 4.8 million IGT shares, intending to sell them in block trades, according to IGT’s Tuesday release.

According to a Monday press release, De Agostini said that it remains committed to IGT.

“We remain fully committed to continue supporting IGT’s long-term development,” said Lorenzo Pellicioli, chief executive of De Agostini, in a statement. “In this context, for the foreseeable future, it is our intention to remain IGT’s controlling shareholder and we are not contemplating any additional transaction involving IGT shares,” he added.

Caesars Korea, Incheon completed in early 2021: exec

Caesars Korea, Incheon completed in early 2021: exec

“Caesars Korea” (pictured in an artist’s rendering)  – the first Asian casino resort developed by U.S.-based casino group Caesars Entertainment Corp – should be completed “in early 2021”, said William Shen, the group’s senior vice president and managing director, Korea and Japan. The firm is eyeing a “balanced” gaming revenue mix at the resort’s foreigner-only casino, he additionally mentioned.

The scheme, being co-developed with Hong Kong-listed Guangzhou R&F Properties Co Ltd according to a December 2016 filing by the latter, is at Midan City in the northeast part of Yeongjong Island, also home to Incheon International Airport, the main air hub serving the South Korean capital Seoul. Excluding financing-related costs, the firm is still maintaining a previously-stated US$700-million budget for the Caesars Korea project, Mr Shen told GGRAsia in an interview on the sidelines of G2E Asia 2018.

The official website of the Caesars Korea project also mentions 2021 as the year for its “grand opening”. “Our investment is we believe is right-sized for the type of opportunity that is available to us as a foreigner-only casino,” Mr Shen remarked to us.

“The concern is always – it is a foreigner-only casino; it doesn’t have domestic [gambling customers] in the way Kangwon Land has tons and tons of visitors. I think our model is one where we want to emphasise non-gaming anyways: the non-gaming capabilities, the non-gaming offers that we have to showcase,” he added. Amongst South Korea’s 17 casinos, Kangwon Land is the only casino where the country’s nationals are allowed to gamble.

According to Mr Shen, the Caesars Korea project will offer approximately 750 units of accommodation, including suites, villas and serviced residences. The non-gaming features of the project include a conference centre, an indoor theatre, an amphitheatre, shops, a spa and a “pool experience”.

Speaking of the intended gaming mix for the Incheon project, Mr Shen said that his firm was targeting to achieve a “balanced” gaming revenue mix.

“Incheon airport is a really, really busy airport with all kinds of flight traffic from many parts of the world. So that’s part of the traffic that we want to capitalise on,” Mr Shen said, mentioning that Chinese and Japanese visitors are amongst the sources the Korean casino resort scheme would target at.

‘Not zero-sum’

“In regards to VIP and mass [play], I think we also want to have a kind of balanced view and not be reliant on VIPs,” the Caesars executive added. “…I think the premium mass segment as it exists in markets in other places in Asia certainly is going to be an attractive segment as well.”

South Korea’s gaming market will continue to face regional competition for the spending of players from northern China given the likely progress of its neighbour Japan’s casino legalisation, as well as the expansion of the casino resort Tigre de Cristal in the Russian Far East, Fitch Ratings said in its latest gaming industry report, “All In: Global Gaming Handbook”.

But Caesars’ Mr Shen told us: “If you use general visitation as a proxy, it’s not a zero-sum game. The outbound Chinese visitation to [South] Korea and Japan has continued to grow, and grow very strongly in the last decade or so, with only a couple of exceptions.”

He added: “I don’t think it is ever a question that one has to drop from the other to grow. There is enough demand in the market for both [South Korea and Japan] to be successful.”

Yeongjong Island already hosts the casino resort Paradise City, a joint venture between Paradise Co Ltd and Japan’s Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. Several other casino resorts are reportedly either planned or under development in that location. They include: the casino resort “Inspire” being developed by Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment; and a casino resort scheme branded as “Diamond City”, reportedly to be developed by a Chinese property firm called LongRunn International Group.

“The opportunity to raise [the profile of] Yeongjong island, Incheon on the regional and global stage as a destination for integrated resort-type entertainment can only be helped by a critical mass of integrated resorts on Yeongjong island,” Mr Shen remarked.

IGT first quarter EBITDA jumps 18pct on higher revenue

IGT first quarter EBITDA jumps 18pct on higher revenue

Gaming and lottery services and products provider International Game Technology Plc (IGT) beat market expectations for its first quarter 2018 results.

IGT on Monday reported that consolidated revenue increased by 5 percent year-on-year to approximately US$1.21 billion in the first three months of 2018, compared to US$1.15 billion in the first quarter of 2017. Revenue growth was “driven by strong global casino systems sales, broad-based momentum in lottery, and Italy sports betting results,” said the firm in a press release.

IGT reported operating income of US$197 million for the first three months of 2018, up 65 percent from the prior-year period.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) were US$436 million, up 18 percent compared to US$371 million in the first quarter of 2017. The company said the increase in adjusted EBITDA was due to “higher underlying revenue and profit across all business segments”.

The result also included US$15 million from the adoption of new accounting standards, said IGT.

“Compelling content and technology solutions are driving our results,” said Marco Sala, chief executive of IGT, in a prepared statement.

He added: “A sharp increase in systems sales, double-digit growth in global gaming machine replacement unit shipments, and sequential improvement in the North America installed base confirm the good momentum of our global gaming business. The positive underlying contribution from each of our operating segments provides a strong start to the year.”

Net loss attributable to IGT was US$103 million in the first quarter of 2018, compared to US$54.8 million in the prior-year period. The firm said the first-quarter 2018 net loss included US$97 million of net foreign exchange loss; if adjusted, the company would have recorded net income of US$31 million.

The company’s board declared a quarterly cash dividend of US$0.20 per share, payable on June 19 to all shareholders of record as of June 5.

Brokerage Deutsche Bank Securities Inc said in a Monday note that IGT’s “first-quarter beat is broad based”.

“We believe the first quarter 2018 upside should continue the favourable trajectory in the stock as it again reinforces the stability of the lottery business and strength in the gaming segment,” wrote analysts Carlo Santarelli and Danny Valoy.

They added: “Importantly, the participation footprint, an area of heavy investment and focus for IGT, was up 376 units quarter-on-quarter in the first quarter 2018.”

Stronger international sales

IGT said that aggregate gaming service revenue declined by 13.3 percent year-on-year to US$422 million in the three months ended March 31.

Revenue from gaming product sales however rose by 29.4 percent year-on-year to US$141 million, said the firm. The company shipped 5,828 gaming machines worldwide during the first quarter this year, and the global installed base rose to 62,563. Global shipments in the three months to March 31 included a total of 2,112 gaming machine units shipped to places outside North America, compared to 2,009 units in the prior-year period.

Product sales revenue for the international segment increased by 37.8 percent year-on-year to US$51 million. The company said that the increase in gaming machine unit shipments included “double-digit growth in replacement units” during the reporting period.

The firm said aggregate revenue from the international gaming segment was US$91 million, up 16.7 percent compared to US$78 million in the first quarter of 2017.

The company’s guidance for the full year was unchanged. On Monday, IGT’s chief financial officer Alberto Fornaro said the company was “solidly positioned” to achieve its “2018 strategic and financial goals”.

“With revenue growing 5 percent and adjusted EBITDA up 18 percent, our first quarter results are some of the best we’ve reported,” he added.

IGT’s net debt stood at approximately US$7.53 billion at the end of the first quarter 2018, compared to nearly US$7.32 billion as of December 31, 2017. The firm said the net debt as at March 31, 2018 included US$119 million of negative impact from foreign currency adjustments.

In conjunction with the earnings filing, IGT announced also on Monday that the De Agostini SpA, IGT’s majority shareholder, entered into a variable forward transaction with Credit Suisse International relating to 18 million IGT shares.

The deal is divided into multiple tranches that are scheduled to mature over a period commencing about four years from May 2018.

IGT said in a separate release that it is not a party to the forward transaction and thus is not issuing or selling any IGT ordinary shares.

Commenting on the deal, Deutsche Bank’s analysts said: “The transaction essentially locks in gains for the [De Agostini] family, without the family actually selling stock.”

“Despite not issuing any new shares, the transaction will improve [IGT’s] liquidity in the stock as the float will expand,” they added.

The gaming supplier said additionally that De Agostini has advised IGT that “they intend to remain IGT’s controlling shareholder”.

Currently, some of the most sought-after titles on the market are exactly Tesla Jolt, WiXX, Oktoberfest and Casino Win Spin, as it can be seen by a growing number of associated promotions at online venues Kaboo and Thrills. The peer-to-peer integration will be delivered through a direct API thanks to the standalone RGS platform by Nolimit which uses a powerful engine for large volumes of play.

Head of Sales at Nolimit City, Malcolm Mizzi, said that a more direct partnership with GiG was inevitable after the group signed an intial content deal back in 2017. By joining one of the greatest networks in the industry, whose efficiency has been widely recognized, our portfolio will be even more accessible in the future across many regulated markets, added Mizzi.

GiG was founded in 2012 and it is publicly listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange. The company has been chasing its vision ever since, trying to make iGaming fair and fun for everyone, of course, through an extraordinary complex system of products and even more exceptional services. Other additions will include titles such as Space Arcade, Bet on Poker, Kitchen Drama: BBQ Frenzy and more.

Half NagaCorp bond funds for Naga 1 revamp: MS

Around half the US$290 million net proceeds from a bond exercise by Asian casino developer NagaCorp Ltd that was completed last week, would be used for refurbishment of its original Cambodia flagship property NagaWorld (pictured) – now commonly known as “Naga 1” – said a Sunday note from brokerage Morgan Stanley Asia Ltd.

The remainder would help with the casino operator’s expansion of VIP gambling business, added analysts Praveen Choudhary and Jeremy An.

But they noted: “High interest rate of 9.375 percent could mean annual interest expense of US$28 million (9 percent of 2017 EBITDA [earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation], and 11 percent of net profit).”

The institution’s analysts added: “Use of proceeds (US$150 million for Naga 1 renovation over the next 24 months and another US$150 million for VIP business) may not drive our 2018-19 EBITDA [growth] estimates (currently 39 percent and 22 percent, respectively, due to Naga 2 ramp) in the near term.”

The analysts nonetheless observed: “The new route to access capital (hitherto not available to NagaCorp) will support future growth regionally and locally,” they noted.

NagaCorp has a monopoly casino licence for the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh and its surroundings, and has also pledged to develop a casino resort in Primorksy Krai near the Pacific port of Vladivostok in the Russian Far East.

A press release in April from the Primorsky Krai Development Corp said NagaCorp had begun pile cap work for its gaming resort in the Primorye Integrated Entertainment Zone.

NagaCorp chairman Tim McNally said in March that the group’s Primorye casino resort remained “broadly on schedule” for operation by 2019.

At the opening of the firm’s Naga 2 facility in November,  a 900-room extension to its NagaWorld gaming resort in Phnom Penh, the firm’s founder and chief executive Chen Lip Keong outlined a strategy to capture – via new resorts strategically placed around the Asia Pacific region – gambling business from the four corners of China and potentially the Japan market too.
